Great Food Truck Race Composites

A couple weeks ago I had the good fortune to work at BPG on an emergency basis to complete a 3D Shot for the Food Network's Great Food Truck Race. Over the course of a few days, I worked both at home and at the agency to create a number of effects to bring the virtual truck "set" to life.

This is a 3D set that was provided to me and it was done as a quick single pass render and we worked within those confines. I was asked to add some food to the pots and a couple of burger patties for the griddle.

The challenges involved included the background plate, which in this case was single pass render with no camera data, recreating frying burger patties, track them, and composite them on the surface along with the bubbling oil, flowing juices, and steam (Did I mention it is for the food network!?)

For the pots, I tracked some stock footage onto the pots and added some steam. To get the exact look required, I hand-made the boiling oil elements using AE plugins.

Additional work included some 3D particles for the truck, some peeling rubber marks, and some roto to soften reflective surfaces.
